"Trump is a doddering foolish mad king like King Lear -- so we shouldn't impeach him!" is one hell of a hot take.https://www.wsj.com/articles/would-shakespeare-impeach-trump-11569621402 …

The WSJ Trump as King Lear thing does offer interesting insight into how the right sees the presidency: Republican presidents are legitimate monarchs who can do no wrong and must never be challenged. (Dem presidents are, implicitly, usurpers).

Yes, America is becoming increasing monarchal.

(But even Elizabethans saw it was more complicated than that - Richard II is mostly viewed throughout the play as in the wrong)

Lear as prophesy: if Dems really want to bring Trump down, they should start looking for his illegitimate sons.

Don't read to much into this. This is the sort of transparent cultural name-dropping that patrician philistines like Buckley patented two generations ago.

Trump wouldn't be the 1st president to be likened to King Lear in the popular media. Here's Time Magazine's cover from Jan. 1968 depicting LBJ as Lear during the Vietnam War.pic.twitter.com/SZHG32LIL8
