Sigh. What an endless game of moving the goal post. Is my use of "gestalt" within normal English dictionary meaning? Yes. Does knowing German give authority for judging English usage? No. Is Language Instinct a good Chomsky endorsed popular introduction to linguistics? Yes.

I don't really have an opinion on the first two. The answer to the third one is definitely "no," if "good" involves accurately representing the state of play, including both theory and empirical evidence in contemporary linguistics.

Okay, put aside Pinker. Find me the most modern up-to-date guide to linguistics and show me where it says that academic words borrowed from other languages cannot take on different vernacular meanings.

It is true that descriptively speaking, that change can vary according to the context in which language is used. For an example of how this may differ, you can just look at the term “liberal” in political philosophy vs. popular usage

Basically, when it comes down to it, you argued that “gestalt” had changed meaning via some general principle you’d read about in a popular book. That hasn’t been the case. I offered a reason why: it’s been somewhat restrained to its original context of use.

No, I didn't argue that it had changed meaning via principles found in Pinker's book. I said Pinker's book is a good popular guide to linguistics which will help illuminate why I think a word can have vernacular meaning distinct from earlier meanings. That's all.

Just quadrupling down on the claims that have already been addressed to people who actually have the relevant expertise. Alrighty then.

I would respect expertise if people could actually explain what is wrong with using the word "gestalt" the way other writers before me have and in a way sanctioned by a reputable dictionary. Or do only professors get to to define words?

The position advocated by all the linguists I lumped into a single view is that conventions depend on the speakers who use the term; if that’s an academic community, then it’s the academics whose conventions (collectively) matter.

Right. And when I tweet, conventions are not academic ones since most people who read me aren't academics. And in that context it's okay to use word gestalt the same way Pauline Kael does, rather than the way it's used in academia.

That doesn’t mean your use is without error; it depends on how you view the restriction of the set of governing conventions. I have a super inclusive view. Lots of linguists and semantics-people don’t. I’m the weirdo.

And I’m not closed to you having the same view of semantics that I do, but let’s be real if it’s a super inclusive view re: conventions of use. It’s damn sure not that close to the domain restricted views I was surveying above. It’s just (like all my views) ultimately correct.
