      Jeet Heer Retweeted Pete Buttigieg

      1. For someone was born, as I was, in the late 1960s, the recent discrediting of neoliberalism (at least on the rhetorical level) is bewildering even if welcome. Neo-liberalism has been the horizon of our life even if (or especially if) we opposed it.https://twitter.com/PeteButtigieg/status/1176262794586533894 …

I’d say neoliberalism is the political-economic consensus that has governed the last forty years of policy in the US and UK. Its failure helped to produce the Trump moment. Now we have to replace it with something better.

      1. Like the Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz, I'm not sure what to make of the reported death of neo-liberalism. Is the wicked witch of the east really gone? Where is the body?

      2. Neo-liberalism, especially after the Reagan/Thatcher revolution & the collapse of the Warsaw bloc, was triumphant in way that no ideology or religion ever had been in human history. If it didn't have near-universal acceptance, it did define and limit all its opponents.

      3. So I can't help but be skeptical. So far, the victory has been more rhetorical than real in policy terms. After all, Trump broke with a lot of neo-liberal orthodoxy in 2016 but has mainly governed as a conventional Republican.

          4. Still, rhetorical victories often precede policy ones. Something has changed so that even centrist Dems now feel the need to disavow neoliberalism. (And market fundamentalism is under attack on the right as well). Something is happening.

Neoliberalism is just liberalism, seen from the point of view of its victims.

It's lost the rhetorical battle, but is looking for a rebrand. Pete renouncing it is a perfect example. There's no way you can say that he's not neoliberal, but he has to find a way to rebrand his politics.

If one defines "conventional Republican" as "cruel, narcissistic kleptocrat" I suppose so. What I want to know is, if neoliberalism is dead, what are we going to do about plain old liberalism bc it kind of sucked too for lots of people.

I know you can't discern this from the far left, but neo-liberal orthodoxy and Trumpism are different on trade, tariffs, bailouts for farmers, trillion-dollar deficits, screwing over allies, undermining international institutions, etc. You'll miss neo-lib when it's gone.
