2. Neo-liberalism, especially after the Reagan/Thatcher revolution & the collapse of the Warsaw bloc, was triumphant in way that no ideology or religion ever had been in human history. If it didn't have near-universal acceptance, it did define and limit all its opponents.

3. So I can't help but be skeptical. So far, the victory has been more rhetorical than real in policy terms. After all, Trump broke with a lot of neo-liberal orthodoxy in 2016 but has mainly governed as a conventional Republican.

4. Still, rhetorical victories often precede policy ones. Something has changed so that even centrist Dems now feel the need to disavow neoliberalism. (And market fundamentalism is under attack on the right as well). Something is happening.

I'm 66 and outside of academic circles I've never heard anyone discuss Neo-liberalism.

some of the surprise, i think, has to do with the fact that both left and center have painted buttigieg as the quintessential neolib. he isn't, really--not that he's particularly left wing exactly but he's pretty heterodox in some interesting ways

like, other than bernie (and maybe yang, who knows what he's going to say next) I'd paint him as most likely in the field to say something like this
