Somehow comic book fans have gotten in their heads that a comic book writer is the equivalent of a movie director. That's not it. A comic book writer is the equivalent of a screenwriter. The artist is the director, cinematographer, lighting, production designer, and cast.

Alan did few layouts and they were often ignored or improved on. Harvey Kurtzman is a better example but even in his case the work was interpreted by another. He’s the closest to a writer/director of the examples folk have thrown out.
