I don't think that's universally true -- it seems like blackface of the extreme ministrelry sort was fairly common in some pockets (predominately white universities in the south) until fairly recently
Sure, comedy is subjective and my subjective experience is that the last time I really enjoyed SNL was in 1980s when Eddie Murphy was on cast. So I can't get worked up about Gillis one way or the other.

When were Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn? They were funny. I agree it hasn’t been funny for some time, but Kate McKinnon does a terrific Hillary, so it’s case-by-case.
