It's more socially constructed, as in society has decided ALL blackface is unacceptable, and therefore you're a racist if you do it. But that's a relatively new construct, which is why you see all these liberals being caught doing it years ago when you could get away with it.

Sure, comedy is subjective and my subjective experience is that the last time I really enjoyed SNL was in 1980s when Eddie Murphy was on cast. So I can't get worked up about Gillis one way or the other.
