2. Trump isn't a dove, nor is he a hawk. He's a showboating narcissist. Obama won a Nobel Prize so Trump wants one too. He thinks he has a way to do it: create international tension and then take credit for negotiating a resolution.

3. This is Trump's M.O. all the time: break something (NAFTA, China trade, Iran deal) and then try and patch up differences (hence his back-channel feelers to Iran). Or in real estate terms: insult a property to distress its value, buy it cheap, stamp the TRUMP logo on it.
