We've discussed this before, but I find this logic strange. There are lots of actions that pols oppose but don't publicly denounce for strategic reasons. Many Ds looked past Obama initially opposing gay marriage. Did their failure to denounce him mean they all opposed it too?

William Barr is a good way to look at the through-line of Republican thinking, which has come to see only Republican rule as legitimate http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/05/how-republicans-built-a-presidency-above-the-law-for-trump.html …

I find these trends very worrisome; I just don't see evidence that they are dominant in such a simplistic way. If Cong Rs wanted corruption & authoritarianism, why did virtually none endorse or support Trump in the primaries? Why are so few willing to defend him on these points?

I think the answer is that they were concerned he would not be reliable re their major goals, tax cuts for the rich/deregulation/court appointments. Once he filled his adminstsrion with ultra rightists, they were assuaged.

Yes, but if what Matt was saying was actually correct, then some of them would have been willing to overlook his other policy deviations because, hooray!, we finally have an outright authoritarian. But that's not at all what happened.

Instead, what's happened is consistent with the view that they don't care very much about a lot of this stuff (corruption, authoritarianism, general lawlessness). Some think it's fine, some don't, but it's not a top-of-the-agenda item for most. And again....

...I think people really underestimate how much of Trump's malfeasance entirely escapes these folks. The conservative closed information feedback loop is real, and creates a lot of ignorance among GOP MCs.

That's a good argument for congressional dems to hold hearings, which are harder to ignore for MCs

Well, I'm certainly all for House hearings to dramatize all manner of Trump personal and administration malfeasance.
