This by @zackbeauchamp is good and important, and connects what's going on in the realm of ideas to what's going on in the world, but I can't help but harrumph a bit at the idea that Pinker, Gopnik, and Lilla are liberalism's available defenders.https://twitter.com/zackbeauchamp/status/1171040388146237442?s=20 …

This is a piece I’ve been working on for a long time — an analysis of the contemporary crisis of liberalism, and why it feels like the liberal response has been so weak https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/9/9/20750160/liberalism-trump-putin-socialism-reactionary …

Sadly, they might be the most public face of intellectual liberalism to people outside the academy.

Put differently, why is the NYRB still publishing people like Mark Lilla, and not @jtlevy and @willwilkinson who occupy a ‘liberal right-centrist’ space but actually have ideas. Let alone its failure to pick up on the people remaking the democratic left, like @astradisastra

I suspect that this is a holdover from a very long period where the original editors held sway and this will be changing in the coming years.

I think the actual answer is that editorial assignments reflect politics-inflected social networks, and those networks can take a good long while to reflect shifts in political alignment.

That's generically true of publications but in the case of NYRB, the overwhelming fact is that Robert Silvers edited it from 1963 to 2017. The "social network" was who Silvers knew and read, which was very wide but not, by the nature of things, universal.

The plausible causal factor from casual empirical observation being that the contributor pool had little turnover, and had aged along with the magazine.

Once an editor finds a good, reliable writer, they tend to stick with them because 1) you always need to meet deadlines & 2) assigning to a new writer is always a risk (can't be sure if they are up to the task). This probably slows down pace of cultural change.

Seems plausible: also how aspiring intellectual superstars radically overestimate the value of “casual brilliance,” and radically underestimate the importance of “gets things done on deadline” to acquiring and maintaining a perch in in the not-so-competitive marketplace of ideas.
