Jeet Heer added,
Circa 1986 this was a thought I had: "It's too bad comic books are so dominated by a single rather eccentric genre, the superhero. I wish they had the generic diversity of film or television." So what happens? Superheroes come to dominate Hollywood.
More pirates! Just like 1986 suggested we could have had! On a more serious note, this is a question I have set my film students for the semester. Why superheroes? ('Because blockbusters' is not a sufficient reply, since really that could be a lot of things.)
CGI plus existence of 50 years worth of CGI-friendly interlocking narratives that perfect franchise grist plus audience of millions who encountered some of these narratives over last 50 years plus post-9/11 search for redemption narratives.
I more or less agree but I feel the universe-building - so important to comics readers - is actually less crucial to film-watchers, although they don't mind it. And there are so many more ways to redeem yourself than by wearing your underwear on the outside! More must be said!
I would also like to read the following essay: "Star Wars" is to Flash Gordon/John Carter as superhero films are to comics in the 60's-80's. There is a nostalgia parallel. Blockbusters need to be nostalgic for earlier pulp.
There's something to that but really people were trying to adapt Marvel stuff into Hollywood from 1960s onwards. It just took time for the tech to catch up.
True. CGI was a necessary condition. But there is some extra special secret something superheroes have that even other blockbusters may lack, if the box office is any indicator. They are the BEST flavor of potato chip. I'm not sure exactly why.
One aspect is that under Kirby's influence, superheroes have become a kind of meta-genre that has absorbed material from other genres (the mystery man, action adventure, space opera, soap opera, war, westerns, detective etc.). Has become flexible
That's a good point! Magic plus science fiction and everything in between.
The Marvel Comics songbook has literally ALL of the properties one wants in a media franchise http://miniver.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-perfect-franchise.html …
