The cowboy is a stand-in for an idealised (white) citizen of Lincoln's republic, before most Americans were wage labourers. So although the cowboy may inhabit the 19th century West, he's a specter of 18th century Eastern seaboard and its family farms.

Good point. It’s insane that that aspect of history has been totally whitewashed by pop culture. There were substantial numbers of black and Latino cowboys. I mean, why wouldn’t there be?
