      I have degrees in math and history from there and also worked two years as a postdoc, it's one of the weirdest microcultures on the planet. 3/4 of my politics can be explained by me not liking it

      Theres's a long history of humanities people being alienated at Sanford. The memoirs and biographies of Irving Howe & Gilbert Sorrentino (both of who fled back to New York) have useful material.
