The tragedy of Gelb's support of Iraq is that if he had paid attention to his own excellent work on Vietnam War (the ironically titled "The System Worked") he would have realized the group-think folly at work.https://twitter.com/nktpnd/status/1167898384109199361 …

What a quote to end Les Gelb’s obit: his support for the Iraq War “was symptomatic of unfortunate tendencies within the foreign policy community, namely the disposition and incentives of supporting wars to retain political and professional credibility.” https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/31/us/leslie-gelb-dead.html?smid=tw-nytmetro&smtyp=cur …

Would you recommend I read this book? (Note my formal reading on the Vietnam War is limited to half of "The Quiet American", so "it's good, but read this other book first/instead" would be a helpful answer).

I wouldn't recommend it for the simple reason that although path-breaking it's been superceded by other research. The place to start is George Herring's America's Longest War.

But every single person who had ever written a "smart work" failed miserably on Iraq. Plus, if you dared to naysay them, you were branded a traitor and laughed at.

The proper use of intelligence is when decisions are made based on facts and details gathered by intelligence. Iraq was a deliberated use of those facts and details collected and them twisted to support an already taken decision.
