      In the same column Stephens wrote: "Adolf Hitler invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939. Russia’s invasion of Poland, no less murderous, followed two weeks later." I don't think any reputable historian would agree that Russia's invasion was "no less murderous." Could you correct?

      It's hard to have that generous read since he goes on in that same column to talk about German killings in 1943, indicating that he's aware (rightly) that 1939-1941 isn't the right time-frame.

          It seems to me that in the above line, he was talking specifically about the Nazi invasion and then the Soviet invasion 2 weeks later, not the entire course of the war.
