So, it really does seem like Manson was a pioneer in realizing that Boomers could be easily duped by a mixture of racism, conspiracy theories and a mediagenic personality. Respect.

He wanted to start a race war. He thought he was told to do so through the song Helter Skelter. You should read Helter Skelter.

I think it’s basically established that that was Manson’s motivation. It’s why they tried to make the Tate murders look like the Black Panthers did it

There's a gr8 multipart series on the You Must Remember This podcast called Charles Manson's Hollywood. It is absolutely riveting, highly recommend: https://bit.ly/1SEBHVN

As the story goes, the entry point for the murders was the misinterpretation of the song. Plenty of crazy going around besides, of course.

Race war may or may not have been the reason for the murders at the Polanski/Tate residence (accounts vary). But race war was a huge thing on Manson’s mind. I’m still trying to figure out why race isn’t a thing in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD at all.

Because Tarantino is obsessed with themes of violence (not dinging him here), so he was exploring the intersection of Manson and Hollywood violence. This wasn't a documentary on the Manson phenomenon.
