I don’t really follow—how does the fact of the movie’s non-reality give it the melancholy, introspective feeling you describe? This didn’t feel that way too me—it wasn’t a wistful “look what could have been,” it was pure fantasy, an intense expression of desire.

Look what the world was like when boys could be boys! We only needed one hot, manly, charming wife-killer, who only passes on raping a child out of fear of getting caught, in order to avert a tragedy! Kill the hippies!

The conversation with the girl felt central to everything to me.

I think yours is one of the best takes I’ve read yet. It helped me put my finger on what I walked away feeling, which was an overwhelming sense of loss at the fact it hadn’t actually ended that way.
