I was rereading the 1619 essays today and what's really shocking is that they are very sober, grounded in mainstream scholarship and fuelled by patriotism.

Exactly. Taking it further: The personal political activities of an academic does not negate their professional scholarship, which is vetted by other academics through peer review and other activities. Academics are citizens and have the right to behave as such.

Essentially, Cathy is arguing that Milton Friedman's work should be dismissed because he advised politicians and dictators outside of his academic work. There are valid academic reasons to dismiss some of Friedman's points. But the issue has nothing to do with his politics.
