The Post Palantir story provides enough information and context so that that if someone wanted to read Peter Thiel's 2016-and-beyond political interventions (Trump donations, Google op-ed, etc) as "drumming up business for Palantir and Anduril," one could https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/08/22/war-inside-palantir-data-mining-firms-ties-ice-under-attack-by-employees/ …

i wouldn't do this, but one could respond with a "why not both" gif.

I think these critiques need a better developed theory of what’s “anti-democracy.” The first amendment and many other constitutional provisions are anti-majoritarian but people think those are consistent with democracy.

Is the rule that anti-majoritarian structures that block bad policies I dislike are democratic but anti-majoritarian structures that block good policies I like are anti-democratic?

Also i think it's worth un-theorizing this. There was a movement in the late 19th century through the new deal to bring questions of economic management and control under the aegis of democratic debate. Many at the time and Thiel today think that was bad and we should undo it.

I think it goes back a little bit further. Classical liberals like Tocqueville & Mill realized that mass democracy would bring with it a measure of social democracy (and cultural populism). They made their peace with that. Those that didn't became what we call libertarians.

Naw man. It was very mainstream for classic liberals to frame democracy in a very limited way that only allowed for what you're calling 'cultural populism'. Dictatorship would be preferable to abhorrent and unnatural social democracy.

I think that's true of the libertarian tradition (indeed that's the whole argument of von Mises' pro-fascist book Liberalism) but not true of Mill or what was called the New Liberalism of the late 19th century.
