My unpopular opinion is that the usually-skimmed technical chapters of Moby Dick are both essential & the best because they are what allow Melville to build up the totalizing world of the Pequod in the other chapters.

Its all great. It’s the first modernist novel, Ishmael is the first intellectual as a protagonist, and it’s a helluva story too.
