I was rereading the 1619 essays today and what's really shocking is that they are very sober, grounded in mainstream scholarship and fuelled by patriotism.

Cathy also thinks it’s out of bounds to compare slavery and the Confederacy to Nazis, even though Hitler himself praised Confederates and American-style racism. Apartheid South Africa was also heavily influenced by the racist laws and customs that grew out of American slavery.

Well, it says that the thesis stated as fact in the Hannah-Jones article -- that the preservation of slavery was a key motive for the American Revolution -- is baseless and contradicted by some key facts. That's the first proposition.

The second proposition -- that northern delegates would not agree to a compromise with the South unless steps were taken to restrict the spread of slavery -- actually contradicts that thesis.
