I was rereading the 1619 essays today and what's really shocking is that they are very sober, grounded in mainstream scholarship and fuelled by patriotism.

The logic seems a terrible stretch. Half the colonies didn’t have slavery, and slavery was illegal in half the states. Clearly, those states rebeled to preserve the institution of slavery. And if that sounds reasonable I have a bridge I want to sell you.

Honestly: read the books. You're making strawmen arguments. You need to read what people are actually saying rather than what you think they are saying.

It's actually an excellent response to someone suggesting dismissing scholarship based on the field or credentials of the scholar.
