1. Stephen Miller is by far the most effective member of the Trump administration and has been the force behind many of its worst policies (Muslim ban, family separation, drawdown of refugee numbers). But he's also a surprisingly banal monster.

eh, he's also a major failure -- his cruelty-as-deterrence policies have failed spectacularly, creating a massive political problem for Trump, and his prediction that Trump's immigration agenda would win in 2018 was buffoonishly wrong, even though no one ever talks about this

Am I misremembering, or didn’t he also grossly underestimate Nancy Pelosi in the shutdown? Wasn’t he the one encouraging Trump to take a hard line with her, expecting her to break?

Can someone confirm something I think I heard on a podcast about Miller, that when he was Comms Director for Jeff Sessions he acted like Pompeo? And basically crowded out anyone urging the Senator to be less than anti-immigrant? I can't remember the anecdote of his Senate time
