Notable that this is the same year we did in fact buy Alaska. So certainly these are part of the same design. Notable how the end of the Civil War - well before the insular conquests - inspired a sort of 'fuck this shit, all of North America is ours' feeling. Canada got off easy.

Well, there was a big Canadian fear that we would be annexed (fuelled in part from Fenian raids) This was one of the instigating factors in Canada coming together as a country in 1867, rather than a series of discrete British colonies.
