Good thread. And I'll add that the Times (and many political scientists) are committed to portraying plutocratic authoritarians as "populist" because they refuse to accept how mainstream racism was (and remains) in elite circles.https://twitter.com/rickperlstein/status/1162036319322873857 …

"Her ideological transformation presaged the Republican Party’s own shift from blue-blooded, traditional conservatism toward hard-right populism." Because blue-bloods were never racist. F the Times and their f'd up ahistorical abuse of the word "populism." https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/14/us/anti-immigration-cordelia-scaife-may.html#click=https://t.co/pcEhw1A5wk …

Yes. This classic demonstrates how, before, during, and after the 1890s, Jews were excluded from elite politics, culture, and commerce by its transaction in private clubs from which they were banned. https://www.amazon.com/Protestant-Establishment-Aristocracy-Caste-America/dp/0300038186/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2KAH4MN5XU9UB&keywords=digby+baltzell&qid=1565887540&s=gateway&sprefix=Digby+ba%2Caps%2C243&sr=8-3 …

Because confronting racism is just so DISCOMFORTING and wouldn't it be nice if we just talk about something else?

I’ve had a half century to observe “race relations” in a state in the Deep South. I’ve observed the behavior of white Southern elites and so-called good ole boys. Notwithstanding the presence of decent people committed to inclusiveness, the white South was and is heavily bigoted.

In the years of my youth, one had to make a deal with the segregation Devil to be successful in Southern politics. And political office was out of the question for African Americans. Things have changed considerably for the better, but the GOP relies heavily on the bigot vote.

Case in point: Hollywood's depiction of foreigners that are disproportionately villainous or negative. For an industry that prides itself on combating racism and Trump, they sure seem to like profiting from both of them (see: the new season of Jack Ryan).

Winston Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt were enthusiastic believers in eugenics, and they weren't even considered right-wing aristocrats.

"plutocratic authoritarians" is a mouthful. 10 syllables is too many and it's Latinate (+Greek) which comes off as highfalutin. We need better words to describe these characters. Also, enough with "narcissistic sociopath" when describing Trump.

I was just rereading William Chafe's "Civility and Civil Rights" on Greensboro, NC. He describes how White elites used the supposed threat of "redneck" resistance to ventriloquize their own resistance to racial change. The actual resistance came from those same elites.

"Thus at the end of the argument about the 'redneck' threat one returns to the beginning: the crucial role of those who held power in the first place. They, not the poor whites, were in charge."
