This is puzzling. Major newspapers make it clear that there is separation between news and opinion staffs. I suspect some of the “misunderstanding” about this is willful.https://twitter.com/TrustingNews/status/1161337359750914048 …

Agreed there is confusion on this point, especially in an online environment where there are fewer visual cues about what part of the paper you are looking at. I also like the idea of the signed editorial -- the "voice of God" effect of unsigned editorials can be problematic.

As a newspaper guy, I get hives at the thought of getting pedantic about how we operate, but I really worry that we simply must do so in the current age. When you adhere to principles many of your readers just do not understand, you are not communicating effectively.

Campaign commercials do this routinely. "The Washington Post [graphic] called my opponent 'slippery' and his plan 'pure fantasy'..."
-
And I would suggest that those who write those ads understand the news/editorial distinction and deliberately obfuscate.

TBF, newspapers observe this distinction rigorously on some topics and not at all on others (e.g. the budget deficit).
