Your fantastic thread covers responses to Trump and the world around Trump. Dale is talking about the way the media - and specifically the reporters and news headlines, not opinion writers as you are - talk about what Trump himself says and does. Rather separate things.

It's particularly puzzling since the press is generally into terrifying the public about things they need not be terrified about

To be fair, the MSM *is* covering him in a Reaganesque fashion. Which is the exact problem: The MSM *is* covering him in a Reaganesque fashion.
This kind of thing was a problem for reporters covering Reagan going as far back as late Oct. 1984, perhaps even Spring 1981.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

1. after repeated lies, you say the person "lies/lied/is lying" 2. if behavior continues, you give "lying" as an honorific 3. w/ this, less & less coverage of statements. eventually a brief blurb at the bottom of the page/paper: "lying Pres. Trump addresses HK protests"
-
a norm whereby "what public figures say for PR is NOT news" would be better, regardless. only cover statements as minor evidence, focus on ACTIONS/documents. "Trump document plans gutting EPA regs"....(final lines of story) "lying Prez Trump said regulations "hurt bizness"
