This is not about money. They know that they, their values, their beliefs, how they talk, what music they listen to...all of it...have been the butt of cultural humor for decades. They were not the cool kids at their high schools. So they can pay their bills—they're still mad.

A lot of their own culture (listen to country music!) is about how they're better than everyone else: more decent, hard-working, godly, loyal, patriotic. I think it's a mistake to see these as people with an inferiority complex or as downtrodden.

The focus on "money" has always missed the key element of what's entailed in a rhetoric of "identification." Kenneth Burke wrote eloquently about this. It is about the symbolic, not the merely semiotic.
