      1. Is the New York Times an often irritating newspaper, one that is often not up to the task of covering Trump era? Sure. Is it worth cancelling your subscription? No, the act of cancelling is based on misunderstanding what the paper is all about.

      2. The Times isn't, despite its own marketing, a "resistance" newspaper. It's a resolutely establishment newspaper with a tropism towards both-sides centrism. It's also a good newspaper that publish a lot of good journalism amid the usual assortment of access driven fluff.

      3. Someone (Dwight Macdonald? Irving Howe?) said in the 1930s Marxists would read the Times the way medieval Christians read Aristotle, as an important authority even if a pagan one. That's a good way to read the paper: a source of information from a point-of-view not our own.

      4. Ultimately the kerfuffle about the Times is about misunderstanding the paper & the sources of resistance. The paper is just a paper. Resistance can use stuff in the paper but the sources of resistance are elsewhere. I explain more here: https://www.thenation.com/article/new-york-times-headline-trump/ …

I am agnostic about subscriptions, but the gripes are really about media outlets *not accurately informing their audiences* If they did that, we could have a different debate over whether neutral journalism has a role to play as tribune for truth or other values under assault.

I think the problem is that the Times is relying on codified rules of neutrality that worked (albeit imperfectly) in previous administrations but are totally inadequate in the face of Trumpian level of lying and bad faith.

I don't think "inadequate" is sufficient here. they are fake-objectivity-ing themselves into being actively deceptive

Me too, and I’m out of patience. I cannot in good conscience keep paying people for mistakes like that headline. That’s why I canceled. Why are so many journos writing threads about which type of ignoramus they think unsubscribers are, and so few about NYT’s editorial problems?

It's not good-faith mistakes, it's repetitive apologia or outright sympathy for a white nationalist government and its supporters. This thread reads like you're trying to win "reasoned intellectual" points with your own apologia on their behalf.

Also this is the same misconception their editors have: readers are not stupid for cancelling a subscription to a newspaper actively working against their interests. Stop talking/writing down to the public.

What explains the Haberman/Hulse/Dowd insistence no "news" in Mueller hearing, and M a dud witness? Haberman said this *before* hearing as she led the liveblog coverage. One news story: 23 (is it?) Ds have come out for impeachment since. One expl: https://bit.ly/1uoBNSz

I agree w much but not this - the NYT got played by Bush over war & other issues, ran with every made up "scandal" against Bill, wrote stories that were false on their surface (front page: Hillary may have broken law... buried inside: not passed until later). It's not just Trump

Embedded reporting (and running most reporting through the embed) was never the model. Treating only scheduled presidential speeches as actions and rallies and social media as mere words was never the model. Treating breaking the law as a political choice was never the model.

In many ways Trump has been good for journalism. Bush peeps were the biggest fucking liars & propagandists—Iraq war?—and ran circles around journos. Trump has finally brought a journalistic reckoning—among 1000 others— it just hasnt fully reached @deanbaquet, @maggienyt, @nytimes
