      1. Is the New York Times an often irritating newspaper, one that is often not up to the task of covering Trump era? Sure. Is it worth cancelling your subscription? No, the act of cancelling is based on misunderstanding what the paper is all about.

      2. The Times isn't, despite its own marketing, a "resistance" newspaper. It's a resolutely establishment newspaper with a tropism towards both-sides centrism. It's also a good newspaper that publish a lot of good journalism amid the usual assortment of access driven fluff.

          3. Someone (Dwight Macdonald? Irving Howe?) said in the 1930s Marxists would read the Times the way medieval Christians read Aristotle, as an important authority even if a pagan one. That's a good way to read the paper: a source of information from a point-of-view not our own.

          4. Ultimately the kerfuffle about the Times is about misunderstanding the paper & the sources of resistance. The paper is just a paper. Resistance can use stuff in the paper but the sources of resistance are elsewhere. I explain more here: https://www.thenation.com/article/new-york-times-headline-trump/ …

Nobody wants it to be a resistance paper. We just want accurate reporting that is not willfully ignorant of context and intent.

@nytimes The bothsidesism is not just dangerous. It’s also inaccurate. By any measure, the Republican Party has become an extreme, right wing, white supremacist party (based on how few Republican officials actually speak up, to disavow this stuff).

Agreed. But if people want to cancel, let 'em cancel. It's pretty clear it's not just about the one headline. I am a lifelong subscriber (and will continue) and, frankly, I read less and less there and more elsewhere, including your publication.

Establishment OK. Tropism not so much. The Times is biased towards what they perceive as the center. That's not good at all. There is no significantly better option, so I read it, but Newspapers really should resist tropism.

They are missing where the center of America is. It has shifted left, despite the conservatives efforts. They are operating in the past.

I'm just going to keep posting this to show that this bothsidesism is not a new phenomenon at the Times. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/1922-new-york-times-hitler/ …

I think the "despite its own marketing" part is really problematic. They sold subscriptions to a bunch of shell-shocked liberals and then gave them Bret Stephens.
