I think your reaction is probably how 99% of the audience reacted, so to the extent that film is a popular art (it is!) then it's the right reading. And yet there are enough discordant notes in the movie to make another reading possible.

I was at the same showing of Howard Stern's "Private Parts" as Polanski, in Paris in 1997. He was accompanied by a girl who looked like a woman or a woman who looked like a girl. Hard to tell. He laughed really loudly at the scene about Howard's Bergman-esque college film.
