One thing that most reviews of Once Upon A Time in Hollywood don't quite get at is how the movie is very rueful, self-critical and (deliberately) ambiguous. @Jo_Livingstone's essay is valuable for highlighting this:https://newrepublic.com/article/154591/quentin-tarantinos-metoo-moment …

The negative view of Once Upon a Time would be that it's mythologizing its heroes, but since that mythologizing is so clearly at odds with history I think it functions as Utopian art does (according to Jameson): as a critique of inadequacy of the real.

One clue as to the intent is the title, which is not just an allusion to Sergio Leone but also to fairytales.

If the majority of the audience doesn’t read it that way—eg people think the Modest Proposal is great; Burke’s defense of natural society is successful—then isn’t that still a dangerous failure?

With MP it was only a minority. But IMO the success of subtle satire/self-critique hinges on empirical reception questions.

Which was an element in “Danjo” and “Inglorious Basterds” Justice only took place in a pulpy 70’s flick universe.

Right -- those films make no sense unless you understand that.

I can’t remember who said it but DiCaprio’s and Pitt’s characters are the kind of guys who say they would have been able to stop the murders if only they were there.

I'm a Tarantino fan too, but he sometimes gets credited for depths that just aren't there on screen.

Once Upon a Time is a movie that Tarantino wanted to make because it allowed him to indulge his lust for portraying extreme violence. Simple as that. No "art". No "mythologizing". Just straight-up lurid voyeurism. When filming it, did he spit on Margot Robbie?
