I'll beat this drum till I die, but Newt Gingrich is, IMO, the colossus astride this political moment. His initiation of the culture wars was the death knell of an already creeky democratic coalition as well as the rhetorical foundation for modern white supremacy.

Nonsense. He, like homegrown US terrorists, are the product of a type of thinking *and* acting which goes back centuries. Pinning events like El Paso on murderous acts rather than the motivations behind them is simply lazy.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard what happened in Norway. I was about to go wedding dress shopping. I just couldn't shake the feeling that something beyond just the horror of the murders had happened - it felt like the way I felt on 9/11.
