      1. Trump's racism is often siloed off from the rest of his worldview -- treated either as a personal quirk or political opportunism. But I'd argue the racism is intimately intertwined with his strong man politics.

      2. Writing in @NewLeftReview, the sociologist Dylan Riley smartly contested the idea of Trump as a fascist but saying that Trump is an example of patrimonialism: i.e the strong man who rules through system of personal loyalty: the warlord or mafia boss:https://newleftreview.org/issues/II114/articles/dylan-riley-what-is-trump …

      3. Trump's politics are all about personal loyalty (hence his heavy reliance on family for staff). He wants to reward his friends and punish his enemies. Help friend Kanye on A$AP Rocky case, punish POC who speak up against him.

      4. But Trump's patrimonialism (his desire to be mob boss) takes on a more sinister bent when refracted through race. In the racist imagination, POC are only good if they are subservient, loyal vassals who accept their subordinate place in the racial hierarchy.

      5. Trump's feudal fantasies of being the boss everyone bends the knee to thus forms a meld with the wider racist ideology (itself rooted in the patrimonial system of chattel slavery) that wants to keep POC (and especially Black people) "in their place."

      6. I have some more thoughts on how Trump's racism is linked with his fundamentally feudal politics in this column: https://www.thenation.com/article/trump-racism-asap-rocky-kanye/ …

It’s why Trump loves to be addressed as “sir” or “Mr. Trump” despite the fact that he isn’t the kind of guy one would address that way. He is an alpha male wannabe.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how - beyond the racism - Trumps attacks on Cummings view him as like a local boss, running a community which he in a sense owns. It’s like the TOS Star Trek episode A Piece of the Action.

That would seem to fit with Trump's general view of politics.

Great thread. For sure have thought about this before...first considered it while reading @comey's book. His narrative is interwoven with his experience with the Gambino fam and other organized crime outfits. Fitting comparison and I think this is spot on.

Consider how Donald speaks of the NFL: There are the players (predominantly African American), and the OWNERS (mainly white guys). In his mind, in owning the teams, the owners also literally "own" the players and can dictate their on-field and in-public statements and behavior.
