2. With the plot of All the President's Men playing in the back of our head, many people expected quality journalism to bring down a lawless president. That hasn't happened, and the frustration has led to an over-attention to failures at the Times.

Yes, there are people who want the press to bring down a lawless president, and who blame the news media for his election. But when journalists listen to that more than they do to more measured critiques, including from their own colleagues, it's like they prefer an extreme view.

I agree that people inside the Times are amplifying the extreme critique to deflect attention away from the the more grounded critique.
