1. This is a good thread, well worth reading, explaining why people are mad at the Times. But there's a flip side to this: people expect too much of the Times (and journalism in general). They want the Times to save them from Trump. That's what's fuelling the rage.https://twitter.com/gregggonsalves/status/1155465927703629826 …

5. This Times story is a real blockbuster which should have caused immense damage to Trump. The fact it didn't is the fault of the political system: of GOP complicity & Dem congress slow-walking investigations. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/10/02/us/politics/donald-trump-tax-schemes-fred-trump.html …

6. We have all the evidence of Trump's lawlessness that we need (thank in part to the Times & other news outlets). The responsibility for holding Trump in check is with congress, which can be influenced by public agitation. So that's where the focus of energy should be.

7. This is the big lesson of the Trump era. No big institutional force will save the world from Trump. Not the GOP. Not "the grown ups" in administration. Not the Deep State. Not Mueller. Not Pelosi. Not the Times. The only option is political organization and agitation.

You literally just agreed that they're complicit, you think they have zero part in creating that environment?

I mean the Times' own political journalists basically ignored it. I seem to remember Peter Baker that same week declare what a good week it had been for Trump

So, if the times does one honest story about Trump out of several hundred stories that normalize him or put out unchallenged spin by garbage people like Javanka and Hope Hicks, we should consider that a fair trade? We might as well watch Fox News if that’s the standard at

Eh I think you’re vastly underplaying how much the soft peddling and bothsidesing cancels out and buries the actual hard hitting journalism. When you devalue your brand the impact of your good work is diminished.

Except that it was the fault of the NYT that they released the report as a single indigestible 14000 word bolus that virtually no one read, instead of bringing it out incrementally over, say, 2 months and forcing THEIR OWN POLITICAL REPORTERS to cover it as well.

Nope. The NYT & US media in general, failed badly in 2016, thus giving Trump the momentum he needed. And not disclosing Maggie’s mother’s Trump PR job was unforgivable. She shouldn’t have been allowed to cover him. The NYT failed to provide perspective on Trump’s criminal ties.pic.twitter.com/BO1ZTkmIdg
