Plus a concern that it would do more to energize Rs than Ds. There is an availability bias issue: Impeachment advocates know lots of other liberals who would feel more engaged if impeachment happened. They don't know conservatives who would be more engaged because of it.

Would the country be better off if he was impeached, not found guilty by the senate and then re-elected because of public backlash over the impeachment?

Also trump behaves like a crazy person and commits more crimes under duress. Republicans fatigue of having to defend his fkups to family and friends. They just want to turn a page. And kavanaugh helped dems, despite the press telling us Rs would be energized.... the opposite.

We can argue about the extent to which political considerations should play a role but they aren't irrelevant. Hypothetically, if you knew Trump was 100% to be reelected if he was impeached but was certain to lose if not I would think we would agree that impeachment was misguided

It's not immaterial if Trump is reelected. I support impeachment but if the Dems don't do it, I want Pelosi on record why. Because she's claimed her decision won't be based on politics but it's clear as day that a refusal to at least open an inquiry WOULD be based on politics.

Pelosi puts removing him from office above an impeachment that won't convict. Playing politics.

The purpose of any sanction is deterrence against future wrong doing. That is the only question about whether impeachment should move forward

Democrats’ #1 goal should be employing the most effective strategy to get Trump out of office. If taking a deeply unpopular principled stand with no material consequence and it increases the odds of a tyrant staying in office, then what are you trying to achieve?

Surely it matters whether impeachment actually makes it *less* likely that he will leave office? I mean, I'm open to argument on whether or not that's true, but if it is, it seems silly to start a process which will actually have the opposite of the desired effect.

Nobody knows what effect it will have. So do the right thing and impeach
