Same here. I’ve tried taking my daughter to Forbidden Planet. She loves graphic novels and there’s one small section for kids but the vast majority of the content is def not for her. I was not thrilled with what the experience of looking at the super hero comics exposed her too.

It goes unmentioned, but the description of the 13-year old imagined audience assumes they are straight boys, which is also a problem.

For at least a generation many comics creators have found the noble pursuit of writing all-ages stories to be beneath them. Largely I think it's an overreaction to the old widespread belief that comics were only for children.

I’ve had the nearly identical experience of bringing my young son to a comic book store and being directed to a grubby little rack of “kids comics”. I’m currently grappling with how to let him access comiXology without tipping him into the deep end of mature content.

In Portland, OR, there's a comic book store: https://bookswithpictures.com/ They have a kid section, too - but it's in the very middle of the store, it has comfy places so you can sit and read with your kid, and OMG there's a lot of great comics for kids.

Squirrel Girl & Spider Gwen are pretty good kid hero comics.

I think DC has made great strides with its kids comics, especially in marketing them towards non-specialist book stores. Marvel's strategy is all over the place though.
