Much attention has been paid to the Olivetti. Understood. But Roth's greatest works were almost certainly written on one of the IBM Selectrics up for sale.

This was from The Anatomy Lesson, not one of my favorites, but I know immediately where to find the Olivetti versus IBM comparison.

Now I"m a big old weirdo. My favorite Roths are Goodbye, Columbus; When She Was Good; My Life as a Man; Portnoy's Complaint; Zuckerman Unbound. I dislike American Pastoral quite vigorously.

That said, I think Selectric trumps Olivetti. BUT WHICH SELECTRIC?

Also I do not wish to contemplate the novelist, naked.

I have never been shy about riding my husband's coat tails to meet people I admire -- it's how I met Bourdain, for example, and Luke Kirby -- but I took a hard pass on Roth.

(Oh, I recognize The Ghost Writer is a perfect novel, but it's Zuckerman Unbound that I love. Alvin Pepler 4-Ever.)

He was a history buff. I think in one of the last interviews he mentioned most of what he read in retirement was history.

That doesn't surprise me but -- a Franklin Mint collection of pewter figurines? That sounds like the kind of acquisition that a young Nathan Zuckerman might have mocked?

This has sent me running back to Goodbye, Columbus and My Life as a Man to read, respectively, the decor details about the homes of the Patimkins and the Shatzkys. (The former had the Information Please Almanacs.)

Is it too late for me to go back to school and write a thesis on the aspirational rec rooms of early Roth?
