1. A very common hot take is that Trump's go-back-to-where-you-came-from comments is smart politics, it moves the conversation from policy to identity, rallies the base, etc. I don't buy it.

3. Trump's racism is polarizing rather than just good for him. There's every reason to think from recent elections (including 2016) that the Democrat's multi-racial coalition is larger than Trump's white nationalist coalition. Especially clear in post-2016 elections.

4. Trumpian racism has in fact been on the ballot quite a bit. Remember Ed Gillespie ranting about MS-13 in Virginia. Trounced. Remember the migrant caravan & troops at the border in 2018? Result was a Democratic wave election.

5. Trump's racism rallies the GOP, but anti-racism also rallies the Dems (getting even Pelosi to lay off the Squad). If the Dems stay united, they can defeat Trump's racism. A more detailed analysis here: https://www.thenation.com/article/trump-racism-2020/ …

They'll find a way to be attacked even if it's Biden; it's what they do.

Clarifying the GOP as a white-nationalist party means anyone who's really just on board for the tax cuts probably just leaves the party. He's forced a realignment on racism we haven't seen since the Dixiecrat defections in 1965.

Trump believes marrying racism & anti socialist rhetoric is a winning formula. He’s mistaken. Cold War ended 30 years ago, & it’ll be hard to portray social justice advocates as evil agents of a foreign power. It will also cost him votes of the non racist right.

Escalating levels of explicit racism might also harden republican support for racist/cruel policies; this is the other way that it's arguably 'good' (well, possibly effective) politics.

That’s a diminishing return that is dying electorally though

It has reach beyond the base, its fluid. 2nd, hes trying to drive the Dems further left, knowing of the divide in the party, ie. Pelosi and the squad or the problem solvers. And it wont work this time due to overlaps in economic populism, but it is a strategy
