      2. One thing we learned is the vagaries of reputation & how that shapes reading. Among literary people, Dale Peck is still fairly well-known as a self-styled "hatchet man" with an over-the-top polemical style. He was a fixture of Wieseltier's book section.

      4. Literary people who saw Dale Peck's byline would likely know what to expect (a baroque, excessive screed). But I suspect few political readers would have that contextual background & so, coming fresh to the piece, reacted with WTF.

      5. This is not to say the piece was good (it wasn't). But it does read differently if you know who Peck is and that some of the kookiness of the piece is not untypical of Peck's frequently failed attempts at stylized writing.

This just shows how much of an editorial failure it was then.

The bigger issue here is that a 37 year old gay D candidate that campaigns on $15 min wage, abolishing the electoral college, abolishing the filibuster, expanding the SC, and reparations for African Americans is considered a centrist hack and gets attacked by ultra progressives.

This is right. As soon as I saw the byline Dale Peck, I knew to expect the worst+50%, from his little spree of v mean and unamusing book reviews years ago. Worst line: "though I’m a peevish fellow, it’s rare that I speak with genuine cruelty." "Genuine cruelty" is his only move!

OK, that wasn't the worst line, obviously. Just one of the oddest.

Doesn’t make a difference to me knowing the context. It’s still an ugly piece of work.

Maybe familiarity matters? I don’t know Peck, but sure, I can tell even from the screenshot that this writing is a shtick with some sort of intention behind it. Doesn’t mitigate the fail.
