The low-density bias of the our electoral system gives Rs a mighty structural advantage, which they simply can't lose as long as they dominate low density areas. It makes it easier for them to win, period.

If they relied on this structural advantage alone, the GOP could maintain its electoral edge simply by picking up a point or two of non-white vote share every cycle. That was the plan after 2012, and Rs like Jeb!, Rubio, and Cruz set out to execute on that in 2016. But: Trump.
