One thing people undervalued about Obama was his reflexive facility, after a lifetime in cross-racial politics, at navigating the sensibilities of all the constituencies of the Democratic alliance. It made him sometimes overly cautious, but almost gaffe-free.

Biden is insufficiently attuned to today's codes & snap judgments, but its as much about us as him. Funny thing is, both in the segregationist senators incident and re: gay jokes, his main flaw seems to be taking for granted that his audience knows & trusts him. They trust no one

I think there's good reason for his audience not to trust Biden since the deals he made with segregationist senators were anti-bussing, pro-incarceration and putting Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court.

That may be true. Still, like most of us, he probably should not be defined by the worst moments in the past 50 years of his public life.

Unfortunately, on major points it's not actually true. Who exactly are we talking about with criminal justice legislation? Eastland retired in 1978. Talmadge in 1980. Biden voted against Thomas in committee and on the floor. Some truth with busing. Other two points simply false.

In his eulogy for Thurmond (where Biden was the only Dem speaking) Biden specifically cited work he and Thurmond did together on crime bill.

I don’t need reminding. While that bill was under consideration I set up a section of TPM for @ewarren to blog abt it. Look it up. He shld answer for all his bad policy calls. Far less important that he answer for made up things that didn’t happen.

They were on the same committee, judiciary, for almost 30 years with Thurmond as a snr member of the opposing party. Most of these bills were bipartisan. So by definition they worked together. This does not remotely bear out the claim.
