The idea that anything goes if it helps to chop down the centrist and advance your ideology is absolutely Trumpian. That’s why republicans let Trump get away with murder.

No. They let Trump get away with murder because he’s giving them everything they want. Judges, deregulation. People to hate.

If you’d reflect on the comment rather than react to it, that’s exactly the point: chop down the centrists so you can advance your ideological project. That’s what McConnell and the conservatives did to every conservative to their left.

Except, Tom, that’s the whole party and all of modern conservatism back to Reagan, which is a sad history of complicity that many of you decline to acknowledge.

I see it's the weekly "everything bad started with Reagan" thing. There was such a thing once as centrist, moderate Republicans. But I know, Charlie, they were just keeping the mask in place. John Heinz and I talked about it at Klan meetings all the time.

Okay. Everyone’s gettin frisky. But serious question. Think we agree Trump didn’t emerge de novo. How far back does the Trump genealogy go on the American right, the GOP?

I think there are different pivot points for different aspects of Trumpism. The ultra-nationalism to Lindbergh, the conspiracy to McCarthy & Birchers, the racism to maybe Goldwater/Nixon, the media stuff to Limbaugh/Fox/Newt.

I don’t understand the Never Trumpers’ fetishization of centrism. It’s as if distance from what they think of as the “center” is de facto bad, regardless of the content of the politics. Progressivism wants more freedom for more ppl. Trumpism wants to hurt ppl. That matters!

That's right. There are antecedents in the Lindbergh/McCarthy/Nixon group. But Trump is a marketer and promoter and is most directly the spawn of the Atwater/Gingrich/Ailes/Limbaugh marketing and media machine.

But the media stuff is how he managed to break past GOP orthodoxy while remaining aligned with the base. He offered the base the opportunity to cut out the middle man and vote directly for the crazy talking head. He's no more or less than an old fox news addict with launch codes.

If we expand the conversation to conservatism without regard to party, Henry Ford was an earlier template for Trump's bigotry than Goldwater/Nixon, with his anti-Semitism, nationalism, ruthless capitalism and vigorous efforts to keep his son, Edsel, out of the military.
