I'm surprised that Biden was unable to say: "At the time, I saw busing as a flawed answer to the real problem of ed segregation, it was deepening racial divides, and we should find alternatives, like magnet schools or residential desegregation." That is how many liberals saw it.

To do that would require being able to step outside the issue & be cooly analytical about it. He couldn't because his stance on busing & friendship with Eastland/Talmadge is deeply personal, a part of who he is. That's why Harris' attack was so wounding.

this is just wildly inflating the eastland/talmadge thing into some kind of a totem when there's really zero evidence this is the case. but i share mark's implicit criticism. this jason sokol piece seems like a pretty good look at the history https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/08/04/joe-biden-integration-school-busing-120968 …

Thing is, Biden opened himself up to all this by specifically highlighting Eastland and Talmadge. If he hadn't done that, the busing discussion would've been a stretch.

this conflates two issues. did he trigger this storyline/conversation by floating this anecdote? Definitely. Is there any reason to believe his friendship with these guys who overlapped with him during his first of six senate terms is some elemental issue? Not really.

Well, I think a big part of Biden's selling point, maybe his core selling point, is that he's the guy who can heal the polarization of Trump by making deals with people he disagrees with. He's the bridge between Obama & McConnell. The Eastland/Talmadge stuff speaks to that.

this is the far stronger and in critical ways accurate critique. eastland and talmadge are marginal to his career. the argument that he simply misreads the moment and made deals that were never good deals is the much bigger problem.

Biden believes it has the side effect of baiting people into attacking him, and that he’ll end up benefiting from that. Hasn’t worked out so well in the field, so far…

A LOT of people want that, and a LOT of them live in swing states. Many of his supporters in polls think he can win the Rust Belt. Biden may not win Williamsburg/Asheville/San Francisco by as many votes as his opponents would, but that doesn't really matter...

I think he failed as a bridge between Obama/McConnell. I really want someone 2 ask him what advice he gave Obama about relentless GOP obstruction? Coz it never seemed to work to Obama/Dem's benefit.

GOP isn't prepared to deal. They refused to work with @BarackObama & will do it again if they get the chance. We need a @KamalaHarris @ewarren ticket. He we tried to meet GOP half way with .@HillaryClinton & .@timkaine but now the Chicks have come home to roost!
