I'm surprised that Biden was unable to say: "At the time, I saw busing as a flawed answer to the real problem of ed segregation, it was deepening racial divides, and we should find alternatives, like magnet schools or residential desegregation." That is how many liberals saw it.

I didnt even know who Eastland was. Once I found out, I was horrified. That was a self-own. His defense of "states' rights" on a civil rights issue was terrible. Busing doesn't matter as an issue today except it shows Joe doesn't listen & doesn't admit mistakes.

I think he's just so out of touch with contemporary politics that he really saw his fond recollection of "civil" discussions w/ segregationists as nothing more than evidence of his bipartisan gets-things-done credentials instead of the radioactive issue it actually, obviously is.

this conflates two issues. did he trigger this storyline/conversation by floating this anecdote? Definitely. Is there any reason to believe his friendship with these guys who overlapped with him during his first of six senate terms is some elemental issue? Not really.

Is choosing to be friendly with racists relevant when choosing leaders? It is, in fact, a choice after all. I think it speaks to issues of core belief and principle. I'd say core belief and principle are relevant to the presidency.
