This @jonkay thread is really remarkable and maybe deserves a little closer scrutiny. https://twitter.com/jonkay/status/1143608368659161089 …

Also: if you are a bad barber, then other barbers will know you are unskilled and talk about it. Most barbers have craft pride! Most journalists have craft-pride. The people who edit Quillette have no craft-pride.pic.twitter.com/kLU6w9Sgf0

Somehow he has not convinced me that a senior writing gig at a major publication is in any way analogous to employment in the service industry. Plagiarists with crappy opinions are not worthy of column space.

Honestly thought the offer for Quillette was some sort of "plot twist" joke. Didn't know who he was and thought he thought it was a dig that her next stop would be Quillette. Oops!

Quilette was always such an obvious landing spot for Wente

I used to feel shock + shame on the rare occasions I agreed with Wente. However, that doesn't warrant dishing abuse when she leaves G&M, as some have done. Still, a columnist needs a thick skin, which she must have. More worrying: How did she keep her job if plagiarism is true?
-
She kept her job because the concept of "ethical and intellectual standards in Canadian journalism" is as mythical as is the Loch Ness Monster.

That's what's getting me about these quotes. Like, "she got caught a few times." If you're an editor and you catch a journalist plagiarizing--do you not fire them that fucking day? How can you not and expect to be taken seriously?
