Howard Chaykin's thoughts on the greatly under-appreciated work of Alex Toth. Toth was a crucial influence on many of us, even those whose styles bear no resemblance to his, myself included. [via @comicsreporter] https://www.facebook.com/howard.v.chaykin/posts/10217053050931111 …

Along with Roy Crane, Toth was the classic American cartoonist who brought the most intellectual rigour to his work. Other great cartoonists were more instinctual but Crane & Toth really applied analytical sharpness to their storytelling.

Sadly, we don't have as copious records of Crane's thoughts on the craft as we do (for better or for worse) of Toth's. Aside from the material that was rounded-up in that Cartoonist PROfiles issue, there's not much out there on/by Crane, is there?

The Cartoonist PROfiles stuff is part of a larger "how to cartoon" guide that Crane made for his assistants. I printed excerpts in TCJ. It's held in Syracuse University among the Crane papers.

I talked to Fantagraphics about this but the judged, alas rightly, that the market is too small.
