I said you'd sometimes portrayed his foreign policy as less hawkish than Clinton's, or claimed his instincts were good, whatever that means. Like this. there was never any chance Trump would be an honest broker of any sort. why not make that clear?pic.twitter.com/1F1ftY3ICv

Saying that Clinton "situated" herself to the right of Trump on some issues isn't the same as saying he was to the right of Trump. By criticizing Trump's "honest broker" remarks as too friendly to the Palestinians, Clinton ratified a hawkish worldview.

yes; her comments were bad. But you didn't clarify that he was lying. I think you should have.

Since I had already wrote that Trump was a BS artist & describe him as incoherent in first paragraph, I don't think I needed to rehearse the point he's lying every time I write about him. I assume my readers are adults & don't need stuff underlined. https://newrepublic.com/article/124803/donald-trump-not-liar …

I mean, in that graph, there's nothing that indicates you don't think he's an honest broker. It would even bolster your point in underlining Clinton's error by pointing out that Trump couldn't at all be trusted on Israel.

In 1960, JFK accused Nixon of being too soft on Russia. That was wrong to do, whether it was true or not (it wasn't true). You don't need to say Nixon wasn't soft on Russia to criticize JFK for this. Point is about JFK being too hawkish, not about Nixon's policy.

??? why wouldn't you want to point out that the statement was false? You're not fully informing your readers if you let false statements stand. This has been a huge problem with reporting on Trump.

I honestly don't think it's necessary to point out that Trump is likely lying after I've already called him a bullshit artist. I mean you're the type of reader who wanted Nabokov to put in HUMBERT HUMBERT IS A BAD MAN & LIAR in every paragraph of Lolita.

??? what? I think Lolita is great. And...you're not writing modernist fiction? You're trying to inform a general audience. "I don't need to point out lies because I'm Nabokov" doesn't strike me as a serious argument.

The readership of the New Republic doesn't need to be told that Trump isn't honest.

They trust you though, Jeet. In that graph you are characterizing Trump as an honest broker. They need to be told that you don't think that.

Then why were you telling them that? Are you really going to argue that wasn't strongly implied in the piecehttps://twitter.com/thedenature/status/1142913822644166656 …

“Incoherent” was quoting Clinton’s description, with no real clues that you share that assessment. You emphasize in this graf that his “honest broker” stance is totally mainstream—again suggesting that you do not find his policy “dangerously incoherent.”
