"For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia" -- Chuck Schumer. His math was a bit faulty.

Ergo, Henry Kissinger? Who cares what Schumer said publicly. And did he say that before or after the Comey letters?

No, the lesson is that Clinton geared her campaign in a way that demobilized many previous Dem voters with a view to winning GOP voters, which didn't work out the way she planned. So those who advocated this strategy should take responsibility for what they did.

Which demographics are you pointing to that saw precipitous declines in turnout rates based on the behavior that you're describing? Do you have, you know "data" or is this a Canadian literary blogger trying to do political data thing.

Here's a complicating factor: 18-29 turnout in 2016 was higher than it was in 2012, 2004, and 2000. It wasn't higher than 2008, but Obama blew the doors off things.

Sigh. This is so cynical and bad faith. Turnout was higher but who did they vote for? "Clinton won the youth vote (55 percent) while Donald Trump only garnered the support of 37 percent. In 2012, young adults voted for Barack Obama over Mitt Romney by 60 percent to 37 percent."

I think because before you were saying turnout was low because Dems allowed Trump to be portrayed as an isolationist/dove. But now you’re agreeing turnout was fine, it’s just that youngs didn’t go for her. Dana is saying that happened because she was over-portrayed as a hawk.

I don't know if I was consistent on this but I tried to talk about demobilization of Dem voters, not turnout per se. Demobilization includes people voting 3rd party as well as staying at home.
